(Macau).- The ongoing revitalisation initiatives in various districts, spearheaded by the city’s six gaming operators, have benefited over 200 local cultural and creative enterprises and brands by facilitating the sale of their products, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) stated.
Through collaboration between the Macau government and the gaming operators, these districts have hosted more than 500 cultural and artistic performances since 2023, offering performance opportunities to over 160 groups.
The MGTO advanced these figures in a recent response to inquiries from legislator Si Ka Lon, who sought clarification on how the six gaming operators have honoured their concession commitments, including expanding non-gaming offerings and supporting local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
As part of their obligations under the 10-year concessions that commenced in 2023, the gaming operators have collaborated with the authorities to enhance cultural and tourism offerings across several districts.
These encompass the Barra district; the pedestrianisation of Rua da Felicidade in downtown Macau; Pier 23 and Pier 25 within the Inner Harbour district and the Mount Fortress area; Avenida Almeida Ribeiro, commonly known as San Ma Lou, and its vicinity, along with Piers 14 and 16 within the Inner Harbour district; the former Lai Chi Vun shipyard in Coloane; and the former Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Taipa, and two historic streets, Patio da Eterna Felicidade and Rua das Estalagens, in downtown Macau.
In the reply, the MGTO also highlighted that the Cultural Development Fund introduced a financial subsidy scheme in September to further bolster SME participation in the revitalisation endeavours of these districts.
With a total budget of MOP12 million (US$1.5 million), the initiative offers interest-free loans up to MOP500,000 and a one-time subsidy of up to MOP100,000 for local businesses recommended by the gaming operators to establish operations within the districts.
“[The scheme] encourages businesses to operate establishments that align with the unique positioning of each district, fostering commercial ventures that enhance the dynamic atmosphere of the areas,” the reply stated.
However, the reply did not delve into specific details regarding the effectiveness and outcomes of these revitalization efforts, a point of concern raised by the local community.
Regarding Si’s queries on the procurement volume of gaming operators from local SMEs, the response only indicated that authorities have been actively promoting engagement and procurement from SMEs through various networking sessions and events.
