Second quarterly gambling report 2024 by the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling

(Madrid).- The GGR for the quarter was € 346.34 million, a decline of -1.24% quarter over quarter and an increase of 10.79% year over year, according to the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling.

Regarding the rest of the main figures, deposits and withdrawals of the players, their variation rates rise in relation to the previous year, 17.87% and 17.76% respectively. With regard to previous quarter, deposits slightly decline -0.30% and withdrawals increase 0.97%. Marketing expenditure increase 6.59% quarter over quarter and new accounts experiences a growth with respect to the previous quarter, 1.77%. Details are shown in Table 1.

In the analysis of the GGR by game segments, it is observed that:

The € 346.34 million of GGR are distributed among € 145.48 million in Betting (42.00%); € 3.61 million in Bingo (1.04%); € 171.69 million in Casino (49.57%); € 0.002 million in Contests (0.00%) and € 25.56 million in Poker (7.38%).

The betting segment has a negative variation rate of -3.19% quarter over quarter and a positive variation 9.13% year over year. There is a decrease with respect to the previous quarter in pre-match, -10.34% and an increase of in-played sportsbook, 5.75%. Other bettings increases 36.62% this quarter, and horse betting  decreases -12.25%.

Bingo has experienced a decrease of -13.94% quarter over quarter and an increase of 1.87% year over year.

In the casino segment, there has been a growth of 2.34% quarter over quarter and an annual variation rate of 14.57%. Slots has increased 19.52% and life roulette 9.57% year over year. Quarter over quarter, BlackJack, Slots grow 12.04%, 13.71%, respectively. On the other hand, Conventional and Life roulette fall -21.10% and -12.05%.

Contests has no activity

Poker presents a fall of -10.15% quarter over quarter and -0.76% year over year. Poker tournament had a positive variation rate of 1.24% quarter over quarter and 6.24% year over year. Poker cash falls -37.02% compared to the previous quarter and -20.63% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

As a summary, the percentage distribution of the GGR for the different segments in this quarter of the period from 2021 to 2024 is shown in Table 2.

Marketing expenses has been € 120.21 million in the last quarter. It may be broken down into € 12.78 million affiliation expenses; € 1.20 million sponsorship; promotions € 62.26; and advertising € 43.97 million. Marketing expenses increases 6.59% quarter over quarter and 22.46% year over year.

Quarter over quarter, Sponsorship increases 24.64%; Promotions, 11.85%; Advertising, 5.24% and Affiliates decreases -11.06%. Year over year, Sponsorship decreases -1.32%; Affiliates increases 0.88%; Advertising, 24.52% ; Promotions, 27.15%. Promotions are broken down into cost of bonus included in prizes, € 21.59 million and cost of bonus not included in prizes, € 40.67 million. 

The monthly average of active game accounts is 1,401,634; which implies an increase of 5.47% quarter over quarter and an increase of 23.65% year over year. The monthly average of the new game accounts is 150,677; with a growth of 1.77% quarter over quarter and 46.57% year over year.

For this quarter, there are 78 licensed operators and the number of active operators by segment is:

  • Betting: 42
  • Bingo: 4
  • Casino: 50
  • Contests: 2
  • Poker: 9
